For Serial to Soka Gakkai

The April 21 issue of "Jiyu Shimpo," the Liberal Democratic Party organ, will feature an apology expressing "profound regret" for having carried a series of articles on an alleged scandal involving Soka Gakkai Honorary President Daisaku Ikeda and a woman. The retraction, issued by LDP Public Relations Headquarters Chief Kaoru Yosano, concedes the Jiyu Shimpo "clearly contained excessive statements and content."

The apology is also slated to appear in the Soka Gakkai organ, "Seikyo Shimbun," on the same day.

The move is generating interest because it is seen as a reconciliation of ties between the LDP and Soka Gakkai.

The articles in question featured a lawsuit filed by a Hokkaido woman and former Soka Gakkai member who seeks monetary redress from Mr. Ikeda.

In a letter of protest delivered to LDP Secretary General Koichi Kato on April 13, the Soka Gakkai, citing that the Jiyu Shimpo serial "contained many instances of what must be termed a greviously libelous nature," demanded a full retraction and apology be published.
