The Metropolitan Police Department on Friday concluded that the cause of death of a city assembly member in a Tokyo suburb in September was suicide, not murder as her family members alleged.

Police said Akiyo Asaki, 50, jumped to her death from a condominium in the city of Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo. The family of the assemblywoman alleged that a religious group was responsible for her death.

Asaki allegedly shoplifted a T-shirt at a local boutique in June, and the case was sent to the public prosecutor for possible indictment, police said.
