A 50 year-old member of Tokyos Higashi-Murayama Municipal Assembly who died Friday night probably killed herself by jumping from a six-story building, police said Saturday.
Akiyo Asaki was found lying near Seibu Higashi-Murayama Station around 10:40 p.m. on Friday.
Passersby informed local police of the discovery and Asaki was taken to a nearby hospital but died shortly afterward, police said.
Police learned there were indications that Asaki fell from a six-story building and they suspect she committed suicide. No suicide note has been found, police said.
Asaki had earlier been accused of stealing a 1,900 T-shirt from a shop in the city, and police had sent papers on the alleged theft to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on July 12.
Asaki had denied the accusation and filed a complaint with the prosecutors office against the apparel shop owner for defamation, sources said.
Asaki, an independent, was elected to the municipal assembly in an election in April to serve a third term, winning the largest number of votes.
On the evening of Aug. 20, an unknown person started a fire in front of Asakis house, using newspapers doused with oil.
Hozumi Yano, a member of the same assembly, said after he heard of Asakis death, I cannot believe she would commit suicide. She was preparing Friday evening to deliver a speech in Kochi on Sunday.
